a. The “anticancerous” effects of Essential Oils:

According to a study published in the “Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics Journal”  the fragrance of the “citronella” essential oil was found to have properties capable of inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. Furthermore, as per the researchers from Ruhr University Bochum who conducted this study, it is the presence of “terpene” component in this and  most other “Essential Oils” that helped inhibit the growth of cancerous cells. Led by Professor Dr. Hans Hatt, during this research it was also found that an olfactory receptor known as “OR1A2” played a major role in the inhibition of the growth of cancerous cells.

b. The “antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral” beneficial effects of Essential Oils:

Apart from “anticancerous” properties, Essential Oils when used also exhibit other beneficial effects such as antifungal, antibacterial, and antifungicidal. Research suggest that when an essential oil is used  it is the organic component known as “Terpenes” that stimulate signalling processes within cells by activating olfactory receptors. Now, these receptors can be found in many tissues in the body that includes skin, prostate gland, and spermatozoa. And hence when “Essential Oils” are used they are capable of destroying a variety of microorganisms in the form of fungus, bacteria, as well as virus.

With recent research studies suggesting that the use of Essential oils could lead to inhibition of cancer cell growth, it is clear that “aromatherapy” is a major component of alternative medicine that is going to play a major role in the future.
